Barfi – Something out of the ordinary but in a good way!

I always argue with people who say bollywood movies are all the same because that statement does not only apply to bollywood but also applies to every film industry out there.  Ask yourself how many superhero movies has hollywood churned out this year or how many rom-coms, animated movies about being courageous?

Still I too yearn for those bollywood films that are not the norm and now more than ever I am getting what I want.  Recently films like 3 Idiots, Ferrari Ki Saawari, Chillar Party, Ishqiya, Saat Khoon Maaf, Kaminey, Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, Paan Singh Tomar, My Name Is Khan, Kahaani, Rockstar, Gangs of Wasseypur, ZNMD, etc. have been made and they are out of the ordinary but in a good way!  Looks like another name will be added to the list come September 14th, 2012, BARFI!

The trailer was released today and I am already impressed.  The visuals are stunning! Anurag Basu is a talented director and the trailer is just a reminder of this.  Moreover, watching Ranbir one cannot help but reminisce and think back to Raj Kapoor Saab and Charlie Chaplin.  This young man is shaping up to be the biggest star in bollywood.  I suggest the Khans stop fighting amongst themselves and watch out for him instead!

I don’t know about you but I’m eagerly awaiting Barfi!

Teri Meri Kahaani: Movie Review

It’s been a while since I wrote a movie review and though I’m rusty here goes…

Hearing Teri Meri Kahaani had under-performed at the box office and had failed to impress critics made my fear that a movie with three love stories was just a bad idea even greater.  Fortunately as is often true the critics got it wrong! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this film.  Here are a list of pros and cons.

1. The film starts in 1960.  This is confusing at first since you expect it to start off in 1910.  After the film was over I realized it may have been for the purpose of having an interval.  You see, the 1910 portion is longer than both the 1960 and 2012 stories thus  for purposes of having a break half way between perhaps director Kunal Kohli decided to save 1910 for last.  However, I don’t think an interval was necessary and having the film go in chronological order would have enhanced the final product.

2. The ex-girlfriend Meera.  In 2012 Shahid’s ex-girlfriend is just irritating.  In todays world relationships face so many diverse obstacles (as we saw in Love Aaj Kal, Socha Na Tha, Hum Tum, I Hate Luv Storys) that I felt the ex-girlfriend obstacle was too superficial a choice.  Still for time purposes I guess the choice makes sense.  That being said I would have preferred a longer film if it tacked something more substantial.

1. Shayanka – the chemistry between Shahid and Priyanka.  Kunal Kohli brought us the Rani-Saif jodi in Hum Tum and we will eternally be grateful.  He does us another favour by casting Shahid and Priyanka as Krish/Radha, Javed-Aradhana and Gobind-Rukhsar.  These two set the screen on fire with their crackling chemistry.  They adapt to their roles amazingly well.  Especially in the 1910 love story.  Shahid’s shers would make any girl melt because not only are they beautiful but also because of the charm and confidence with which he recites them.  Priyanka excels too by adding that typical punjabi accent to her hindi.  I’m punjabi myself and when I speak Hindi that exact accent comes into it!

2. The sets.  Whoever made the sets should take a bow! Kunal Kohli you are a man of fantastic vision to pull this off! The setting of 1910 is Sargoda (a village in pre-partition Punjab) and it looks amazing! My mom tells me my grandfather’s family was originally from Sargoda so that makes me happy too haha!  I am contemplating taking my grandpa to see the film so he can tell me if it’s accurately designed or not.  The 1960 set is created digitally and you can tell in some parts but it is mostly done very well.

3. The film is what it promises.  I read a couple reviews saying Mr. Kohli was trying to make an epic romance but I don’t think that was the intention.  I think he meant the film to be a romantic film that when you leave the theatre you leave happy and hopeful that you too can find love.  If I’m right he succeeded.  Reading the reviews after having seen the film I can’t help but think that one of two things must be true. One the critics don’t believe in love. Two the critics are too old to remember how they dreamt of love when they were in their late teens and early twenties.  This movie made me say “aww” or “that’s so sweet” so many times.

To conclude, if you are young and love to fantasize about your mr.right or miss right then this movie is a must see.  Ignore the box office numbers and the critics and have a good time!  It was my last day as a “teenager” and I couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend it!

Rating: **** (4/5 Stars)

Teri Meri Kahaani Crew Has A Blast in Australia

Priyanka and Shahid are eagerly promoting their next film Teri Meri Kahaani.  After promoting the film during IIFA 2012 in Singapore, they headed to Australia.  The film’s director Kunal Kohli accompanied them and tweeted some pictures of their shenanigans.  Looks like they had a blast.

These two are a stunning couple.  It really is unfortunate that they are no longer a couple cause their kids would be really good looking.  For now we will have to thank Kunal Kohli for bringing them together in reel life at least!

I don’t know about you but I’ll be watching Teri Meri Kahaani first day, first show on June 22nd! I suggest you do so too!

The film looks AMAZING! Critics will argue that it’s not a new storyline and just the same old love triangle story but I don’t think that is a bad thing! If the movie is execute well (which is looks to be) then it’s a good film.  Imtiaz Ali is in my top three favourite filmakers and knowing he has written the film makes me even more excited to see this film!

Dabangg 2 Update

Here is some news on the Dabangg sequel courtesy Bollywood Hungama and Taran Adarsh:

I am so glad Sonakshi is there in the sequel, after all she is the Dabangg girl!  I understand that Sonu Sood could not be in the sequel since he died in the first film but I am going to miss him :(! I guess Prakash Raj is just as scary but it seems he is the villain in every big budget action movie lately (Bodyguard, Buddha Hoga Tera Baap, Singham).  I want to see him do something else.  Though I’m super happy that Deepak Dobriyal is in the film (loved him as Pappi Ji in Tanu Weds Manu).

Talaash Trailer!!!!!!!

Finally the wait is over!  Here is the official trailer of Aamir Khan’s next film Talaash!

Now this is what I call a trailer!  It is crisp, suspenseful and has great dialogues in it.  I expected no less from Excel Entertainment.  There are only three film banners that I will blindly trust to make good films and those are (1) Dharma Productions, (2) Yashraj, (3) Excel Entertainment.  These three can make a film and I’ll go watch it without even seeing a trailer, that is how highly I think of the quality of their work.  So, I knew that this trailer would not disappoint.

Kareena looks to be playing something around the lines of a prostitute/bar dancer.  It is nice to see her in a different avatar than her recent onslaught of glamorous looks.  Rani’s looks reminds me of her character in Yuva.  She always looks stunning in sarees.  Lastly, Aamir’s character’s dialogues succeed in fascinating us.  That is no surprise, all of Excel’s films have had wonderful dialogues, be it Don, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Rock On, ZNMD or Don 2.  The moustache also suits Mr. Khan surprisingly well.

Cannot wait for it to release on June 1st, 2012.

PS Yup I just checked and the man himself, Mr. Farhan Akhtar has penned the dialogues for the film.  If that isn’t good enough the very talented Anurag Kashyap has given additional dialogues!  HUGE EXPECTATIONS from this film!
